Worcester, MA (April 28, 2020) – Multiscale Systems, Inc. celebrates its second birthday this April with a slew of announcements representing the monumental progress it’s made in the last few months.

• US Department of Energy (https://science.osti.gov/sbir) selects Multiscale Systems for a Phase I SBIR to solve outstanding problems in the downhole environment found during geothermal drilling. Unlike conventional oil and gas drilling, geothermal drilling demands access to harsher environments that experience higher temperatures, greater pressures, and exposure to naturally occurring corrosive agents. With these challenges in mind, Multiscale Systems was selected to study the feasibility of their mechanical metamaterial technology as an innovative and novel solution to the problems found in the downhole environment. In this Phase I feasibility demonstration, Multiscale Systems is making concrete progress to develop and deploy technology that will unlock this potentially limitless natural resource.
• MassCEC (www.masscec.com) selects Multiscale Systems for the Catalyst Program award. In January, the Baker-Polito Administration announced $1.7 million in funding for 18 early-stage clean energy companies based in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The awardees benefiting from this support, including Multiscale Systems, are part of a growing clean energy sector based in MA, which has grown 86% since 2010, and currently employees 112,000 workers across the state. As emissions from the transportation sector account for the largest share of US emissions, Multiscale Systems’ efforts to produce lighter, stronger, multi-functional metamaterial for semi-trailer manufacturing support the State’s efforts to improve air quality while supporting green jobs.
• Lever (www.leverinc.org) selects Multiscale Systems to join its 2020 Berkshire Sustainability Challenge cohort focusing on supporting innovative startups providing novel solutions for sustainable technologies. This accelerator provides tailored mentorship and access to resources to help in the creation of scalable companies that can attract revenues to the region and create jobs. The program culminates in May with a Shark Tank-style pitch event, where Multiscale Systems will compete with four teams for the most scalable business model associated with the challenge’s sustainability goals.
• US Army selects Multiscale Systems as Phase 3 awardees for xTechSearch 4.0 (https://www.arl.army.mil/xtechsearch). This competition seeks to connect innovative new technologies developed by non-traditional defense partners to the defense technology ecosystem. Through a Shark Tank-like series of competitive rounds, the Army has relied on a series of experts from across the Department of Defense (DOD) ecosystem to help down-select to a small cohort of 10 finalists, including Multiscale Systems. In October, the competition will culminate in a Demo Day event held at the AUSA expo in DC where the finalist teams will present their technological innovations to a panel of Army judges. Already, our participation has been instrumental in helping us identify currently unmet needs in the DOD ecosystem, and we are excited to be active participants in this event.
• New England Business Association (https://newenglandbusiness.org) selects Multiscale Systems for the Manufacturing Matching Grant. This funding agreement between the Association, Multiscale Systems, and Eri Design provides a 1-for-1 match to help offset the costs of developing an innovative new software tool for Multiscale Systems to manage its growing inventory of metamaterial designs. By supporting Eri Design to develop this tool, the Multiscale Systems team will have better access to the extensive amount of data being generated by the team, allowing us to focus on our business development opportunities and not the day-to-day data wrangling.
• Ansys (https://www.ansys.com/About-ANSYS/startup-program) admits Multiscale Systems into their Startup Program, giving access to their extensive engineering software suite at price points affordable to nascent and growing businesses. By providing these resources, Ansys is helping Multiscale Systems lower technical barriers and de-risking the implementation of our technology in commercial solutions.
